The Story of the Quran
Easy Introduction to Quranic Sciences
Simply put, Quranic sciences are those critical disciplines that are necessary to understand the various aspects of the Quran. Without these disciplines, the Quran simply cannot be read and understood. Without these disciplines, the Quran cannot be interpreted. Without these disciplines, we simply cannot apply the knowledge of the Quran to solve new and emerging problems facing humanity. Examples of Quranic sciences include:
Arabic linguistics غُلومُ اللُّغَةِ
Orthography الرَّسْمُ الْقُرْآنِيُّ
Modes of recital (Variant Recitations) القِرَاءَات
Collation الْجَمْعُ
Abrogation النَّسْخُ
Order of surahs and verses ترْتِيبُ الآي والسُّوَرِ
Causes of revelation أَسْبَابُ النُّزُولِ
Tajwid التَّجْوِيد
Islamic legal theory أُصُولُ الْفِقْهِ
Tafsir or exegesis التَّفْسِير
Quranic sciences, like any other natural, physical, or life science, consist of essential skills, body of knowledge, technical vocabulary, definitions, postulates, axioms, self-evident truths, common notions, generalizations and exceptions, universals and particulars, theories, principles, truths, rules, proofs and theorems, evidences, immutable first principles, domains and unchartered territories, students, teachers, practitioners, scholars and their authoritative texts, and last but not least, the data. Unfortunately, we also have fake scholars and charlatans.
For the Quranic sciences, the primary source of data is the Quran, which is manifested in various modes of recitals (القراءات) and the Arabic language along with its various classical dialects and disciplines such as morphology (الصَّرف),
grammar (النَّحْو), rhetoric (البَلاغَة), semantics (المعاني), etc.
